A 400 year old Legacy
Hemis monastery history and philosophy dates back to more then 400 years and museum that it comprise explains lot of stuff about Buddhism.
Naropa (guru or mahasidh) according to some source is an individual with interesting storyline. He held north gate of Nalanda university during his times. Both, Nalanda University and Naropa has amazing stories and both are symbol of knowledge. I would love to study both in more details as time permits.
Philosophy, knowledge, debate and discussion were dominant in that era and Naropa was considered highly knowledgeable man. He was informed of Tilopa (more knowledgeable man) and decided to leave his post in Nalanda University as North gate keeper (high post) and meet Tilopa.
Quest to meet and ultimately learn on the way were through 12 minor hardships and after he became disciple of Tilopa, underwent 12 major hardship to get enlightenment.
Information is superficial in nature, there is much to know about wisdom the man had and about Buddhism or on similar lines about Hinduism and Jainism.
Kshetrapal - A gate keeper or area protector to say. Buddhism and Jainism (Hinduism) as well has amazing similarity and it was good to learn this term being used in Buddhist literature in Museum as well. The philosophy to liberation may be different but destination thrived is same in all three religion.
Buddha - Opposite Monastery |
Namgyal King - A mighty king who's might is cherished by all Ladakhi and Buddhist.
Om mani padme hum : A mantra which all Buddhists in Ladakh and Tibet iterates.
The meaning is not known by many, many can not translate in your language. But overall meaning was conveyed by a Bhutanese monk who visited Naropa Festival being celebrated from 16-Sep-2018 Sunday to 20-Sep-2018.
He conveyed, there are total 6 realms including earth, heaven, hell and so on. The living being of all the realms may get peace and patience to live their life.
To Hemis from Leh and Return :
There is a Traveler mini Bus to Hemis from Leh in morning around 9:00 AM and returns by around 3:45 PM. It is tough to Hitchhike unless you walk about an hour to reach Karu which is 5km away.
